I know some dj’s, for example ones who play trance music will still use vinyl records why is this? Is the sound quality still as good as say a compact disc?

The sound quality is much better on a vinyl record. Cds are limited to digital signal why analog can record any sound in the entire spectrum. Also vinyl sounds much warmer and brighter than digital and really cant be compared in sound quality.

Like most every subject, this is also controversial. There are people who say analog audio is still more realistic sounding than digital audio. That is why analog tube amplifiers are back into manufacture, and used ones are soaring in price.

Vinyl records were made with analog technology, so again we go full circle and bring back the old times. Kind of like restoring an old car which was made with steel instead of plastic like the new ones.

Some DJs play vinyl records because no digital copy of the particular music is available.

All digital recordings, CDs etc. were analog before they were digitalized. In the process of digitalizing a recording they only sample part of the analog sound, not all of it. Therefore some is lost in the process. Digital technology is also a metallic hard sound which cannot give the warmth and beauty of an analog recording.

I was involved in a test in a large auditorium in which 600 people listened to two samples of the recording of a pipe organ. One sample was digital and the other was analog. The people were to choose the best, #1 or #2, not knowing which was which. They put their choice on a slip of paper and handed it in. The result was the overwhelming majority chose the analog sound.

It is the same as the way some people love classic vintage cars.

In terms of sound quality CDs are probably better, if you define sound quality as less noise, more music.

CDs and modern audio sound has a wider spectrum and less hiss and surface noise, but some of the richness and depth that was on the old vinyl recordings has been lost in the digital sampling process.

So for this reason there are people who prefer the old vinyl recordings. To fully appreciate them one needs to play them through tube type analog audio equipment.
